Water Damage
Water damage should be looked at right away. There is nothing pleasant about the presence of moisture within the cavities of the home. There is a large number of damaging effects that can happen to a home. Moisture within a wall typically results from some house construction or maintenance fault or failure. It’s never going to get better on its own. Instead, things will gradually get worse. Here are reasons why and how humidity can flow into areas that do not belong to it.
Water Damaged Plasterboard
Condensation
In exterior walls, gaps and cracks can allow cold outdoor air to flow into the warmer interior wall space. This cold air can naturally form condensation within the wall cavity on surfaces, producing a permanently moist environment that is trapped within the wall. Locating and sealing internal cracks and gaps that allow outside air to penetrate external walls requires careful examination.
Plumbing Leaks
Due to corrosion and/or leakage at joints, water supply lines routed through wall cavities may have tiny pinholes. These can leak continuously or intermittently, soaking insulation within walls, saturating wood and drywall structure. Uninsulated copper cold water pipes can also sweat condensation in sufficient quantities to cause damage within walls. Especially if structural cracks and gaps allow moist outdoor air to infiltrate the cavity of the wall.
Penetrating Rainwater
Exterior siding is resistant to showers and splashes, not water continuously flowing down the wall. Clogged gutters that frequently cascade water down outside walls during rain. Water penetration of the siding may also infiltrate the void of the wall, causing damage to the internal moisture.
